On the 19th of April, we had the pleasure of participating in the OCP Regional Future Technologies Symposium 2023, held in Prague, Czech Republic. This noteworthy event served as an ideal platform for us to present an interesting topic: “Cloud infrastructure: it has to work, and it has to be sustainable … Surely this is not impossible!”
Current situation with carbon footprint and cloud computing companies
The intricate relationship between carbon footprint and energy consumption in cloud computing companies has made reducing carbon emissions from data centers a pressing concern on a global scale. Consequently, the quest for enhanced energy efficiency in cloud computing has become a paramount subject of interest.
The concept of Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), which measures the overall efficiency of cloud computing data centers, strives to achieve a value as close to 1.0 as possible. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that attaining an ideal PUE is 1.0. To illustrate this point more vividly to our audience, we drew inspiration from the analogy of three hotels:
Sardina Systems solution
Consider three hotels that operate at 100% electricity efficiency. While this may seem optimal at first glance, a deeper examination reveals room for improvement. If these three hotels are not fully occupied, moving the guests into one or two hotels would significantly enhance energy efficiency. This simple example definitely conveys the notion that the energy consumption is most optimal when energy is not consumed.
Building upon this fundamental example, we translated the concept of energy efficiency among three hotels into a blueprint for creating a sustainable cloud environment. Our approach begins by meticulously tracking utilization across the system. And then calculating how optimally the workloads are packed across the whole facility while effectively solving large-scale jigsaw problem. With the utilization metrics, our decision engine calculates the optimal layout for the workloads, rebalancing where appropriate, and turn servers on or off, or to put them into low power states – thus minimizing and eliminating energy usage.
In the pursuit of sustainability, we firmly believe that not consuming energy is the greenest form of energy use.
