The latest SCaLE 22x: Key Trends, VMware Migration and more

The 22nd Annual Southern California Linux Expo (SCaLE 22x) took place from March 6-9, 2025, at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, CA. Recognized as the largest community-run open-source and free software conference in North America, SCaLE 22x continued its tradition of uniting enthusiasts, developers, and industry leaders to explore and collaborate on the latest advancements in open-source technologies.

Main Topics and Trends

This year’s conference agenda showcased a diverse array of topics, reflecting the dynamic nature of the technology landscape:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): Discussions delved into the integration of AI across various sectors, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize industries and daily life.
  • DevOps and Cloud Native Technologies: Sessions focused on the latest practices in DevOps, containerization, and the adoption of cloud-native architectures to enhance scalability and efficiency.
  • Open Source Community Engagement: Emphasis was placed on building and sustaining vibrant open-source communities, highlighting the importance of collaboration and shared development.
  • Security and Compliance: Workshops addressed the growing need for robust security measures and compliance protocols in an increasingly digital world.
  • Systems and Infrastructure: Presentations explored the intricacies of system architectures, including challenges associated with systems and strategies for effective management.
  • FOSS at Home: Sessions highlighted the benefits of self-hosted solutions like Nextcloud, offering attendees insights into managing personal cloud services securely and efficiently.

“I appreciated that SCaLE 22x focused on truly relevant and pressing topics this year: from HPC and AI in the cloud to the ongoing challenge of Kubernetes complexity for some organizations. And, of course, the ever-popular discussion on migrating away from VMware. Even with powerful tools already available for moving from VMware and Nutanix to OpenStack, many organizations still face the same questions — how to approach migration effectively and what functionalities they might have to leave behind. It was interesting to see different vendor approaches: some pushed for bold, high-risk migrations, while others took a more cautious, step-by-step strategy to avoid disruptions.”

Kenneth Tan, Executive Director at Sardina Systems.

VMware Migration: Insights from Kenneth Tan’s Presentation

A notable session on the conference’s opening day was presented by Kenneth Tan, titled “Preparing VMware Systems for OpenStack Migration”. This talk addressed the complexities organisations face when transitioning from VMware to OpenStack environments.

He outlined strategies to evaluate existing VMware infrastructures, identify potential challenges, and develop tailored migration plans that minimise downtime and ensure data integrity. By leveraging automation tools and best practices, Kenneth Tan demonstrated how organisations can achieve a seamless transition to OpenStack, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and reducing licensing costs.

During his presentation, Kenneth Tan highlighted our latest case study involving FIFGROUP, an Indonesian financial services company, to illustrate the practical application of VMware to OpenStack migration with FishOS Move It.

FIFGROUP sought to modernize its cloud infrastructure to enhance scalability and reduce operational costs. By implementing Sardina Systems’ FishOS, FIFGROUP successfully transitioned from a VMware-based environment to an OpenStack platform just in 4 days. This migration enabled the company to achieve greater flexibility and efficiency in its operations.

Conclusions and Observations

SCaLE 22x underscored the pivotal role of open-source technologies in driving innovation and addressing contemporary challenges. The convergence of AI with open-source platforms emerged as a significant trend, showcasing how collaborative efforts can lead to groundbreaking solutions.

The focus on DevOps and cloud-native technologies highlighted the industry’s shift towards more agile and scalable infrastructures, reflecting a commitment to optimizing operational efficiencies.

Community engagement sessions reinforced the ethos of open source, emphasizing that the strength of these projects lies in active and inclusive participation. Security discussions served as a timely reminder of the evolving threat landscape, prompting attendees to prioritize proactive measures and compliance adherence.
